Flexible acoustic ceiling solution at Actium Assen
On behalf of Zwartwoud Groningen B.V., we realised a remarkable acoustic project in the Actium Wonen building in Assen. A project where flexibility and appearance come together perfectly. The brief was clear, but technically challenging: a ceiling solution with baffles that not only provide optimal sound absorption but are also adjustable over a length of more than 11 metres.

The Challenge
The project consisted of three arrangements, each with 40 baffles made from 25 mm thick PET felt, spanning approximately 11,200 mm and with a width of about 1,250 mm.
The wish of Actium was to be able to use the ceiling dynamically: open for a spatial effect or closed for maximum acoustic performance. Additionally, the distance between the baffles had to remain constant at all times, even during sliding.
The solution
Together with specialised partners, we translated this challenge into a smart and stable construction.
- A system of steel cables was used, professionally tensioned by an external specialist
- We commissioned custom metal profiles
- These profiles are interconnected with steel cables, allowing the entire structure to move as a single system
- Within this construction, the PET felt baffles were installed
The result is a smoothly sliding ceiling in which all baffles remain perfectly aligned, regardless of their position.
The final result
What you immediately notice upon entering is the calm, streamlined structure of the ceiling that gives the space its character. The PET-wool baffles in taupe create a warm, modern appearance and also contribute to a pleasant acoustics.
Thanks to the smart sliding system, you can easily adjust the space. Open for a light, spacious atmosphere or closed for extra acoustic comfort.
